The Financial Times has signed a licensing deal with OpenAI to train artificial intelligence (AI) models on its attributed content, the newspaper said on Monday, in the latest media partnership for the Microsoft-backed startup.

The agreement will expand OpenAI’s generative AI chatbot ChatGPT with attributed FT content, and the companies will collaborate on developing new AI products and features for FT readers.

The partnership will also allow ChatGPT to use selected summaries, quotes and links to stories from the FT in its chatbot, the newspaper said in a statement, without disclosing the financial terms of the deal.

OpenAI struck a similar deal with the Associated Press last year, with the news publisher licensing part of its archive of news stories to OpenAI.

ChatGPT, which kicked off the GenAI boom in late 2022, can mimic human conversations and perform tasks such as creating summaries of long texts, writing poems and even generating ideas for a themed party.

Some media already use generative AI for their content. BuzzFeed has said it will use AI for personality quizzes on its site, and the New York Times used ChatGPT to create a Valentine’s message generator last year.
