What is error code 0x80070643?

Although the error code 0x80070643 provides little specific information about the problem, a common error message usually indicates what exactly went wrong during a Windows Update. During the January 2024 Microsoft Patch Day, the error message “Windows Recovery Environment maintenance failed. (CBS_E_INSUFFICIENT_DISK_SPACE)”.

This error occurs while updating the Windows Rescue Environment (WindowsRE) because the partition is simply too small. Microsoft provides instructions for resizing Windows partitions. Microsoft’s instructions can be found here. According to these instructions, the partition should be about 250 MB in size, but in practice a size of at least 1 GB seems more sensible.

Manually resizing partitions can be complicated. For example, you can often make better use of partition tools such as the MiniTool Partition Wizard, which is free to install and use.

Additional tips from Microsoft

Microsoft has now published additional tips to correct error code 0x80070643 after installing Windows updates. Alternatively, you can also try performing the given steps using an administrator account. It may be sufficient to start Windows Update with an administrator account. There may also be a connection with the TPM module.

Problems with .NET Framework

The .NET Framework plays an important role in installing system updates. If this file is missing or damaged on your computer, you may experience problems with the update:

  1. Visit this page & download the latest version of .NET Framework.
  2. Open the downloaded file and follow the instructions in the installation wizard. Restart your computer after successful installation and then try updating again.

Problems with Windows Defender

You may see the error code 0x80070643 because there were problems updating Windows Defender. You can try to resolve the error by updating Defender yourself:

  1. Go to this page & download the Windows Defender file.
  2. Then you open the file, which can usually be found in the Downloads folder. Wait a few minutes and keep in mind that this is a so-called silent installation. This means that no installer is opened, but the installation takes place in the background. Then restart and try installing the update again.
