Things have not been going well between the supporters of Racing Genk and Jelle Vossen since his transfer to Club Brugge. Now the attacker reaches out to the Limburg fans.
Jelle Vossen was a monument to Racing Genk with no less than 248 matches in which he scored 105 times. In the summer of 2015 he made the switch to Burnley, but the same summer he went to Club Brugge. This was not well received by the fans of Racing Genk.
In the podcast ‘TerrilTalks’ about Racing Genk, he gives extra explanation about how this transfer came about and he wants to make amends with the fans of Racing Genk.
“My gut feeling wasn’t right in Burnley, but I signed anyway. I think that’s the only time I’ve made such a wrong decision. I just wanted to go abroad, but that was against my gut feeling. In hindsight, I should have followed my gut feeling,” he said. “My performance wasn’t good either, I wasn’t feeling well and neither was my wife. Then you start to think.”
Unexpectedly, at the end of the transfer period, Club Brugge came up with an interesting proposal. One he couldn’t refuse at the time. “I’ve never made it a secret that I had sympathy for Club Brugge. But, hand on heart, this was no construction. I had to think about myself at that moment.”
He hopes that one day he can go back to Racing Genk. “I don’t dare to go into the stadium anymore. That’s a shame when you know that you played football there for almost 15 years. I feel much more appreciation from the side of Club Brugge, while I have played much less there in comparison. I don’t want to apologize on my knees, but I hope that will change,” concluded Vossen.
