Roberto Martinez has expressed concerns about some of his Red Devils in recent weeks, especially in defence. Dedryck Boyata and Jan Vertonghen had disappeared from Hertha and Benfica, but have now found a way out at Club Brugge and Anderlecht. Jason Denayer, however, remains in a worrying situation as the 27-year-old has still not found a new club.
His name was linked to a number of clubs in the summer, but in the end no agreement was reached. FC Sevilla, Torino and the Saudi Al-Nassr, among others, passed the review, but without result. In recent days, his name has fallen with Wolverhampton, who are still looking for a central defender after Willy Boly moved to Nottingham Forest at the last minute.
However, another notable option now crops up for Denayer. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport he has now also appeared at AS Roma. Jose Mourinho had been asking the club board there for months to no avail for defensive reinforcements, but after Sunday night’s 4-0 breakout against Udinese, Roma would finally spring into action. Because the transfer market in Italy is already closed, Roma can only attract a free player.
Denayer is one of the avenues being studied, but by no means the only one. Nikola Maksimovic (ex-Napoli), Dan-Axel Zagadou (ex-Dortmund) and Luca Ceppitelli (ex-Cagliari) would also be in the picture. It is therefore by no means certain that the Roman interest will become concrete for Denayer.
