Last week it was announced that Adrian Newey will be leaving Red Bull Racing. The news hardly came as a surprise, but people are now mainly wondering where Newey’s future lies. Newey himself states that he is tired and that he wants to take it easy.
Newey played an important role in the successes of Red Bull Racing. It is therefore a big loss for Red Bull, but the Austrian racing team does not seem to be worried. In the meantime, many teams are interested in Newey’s signature, including Aston Martin, Ferrari and Williams are said to be interested. Only the latter team has publicly admitted they are talking to Newey.
Forrest Gump
Newey had only responded to his departure in the press release. In Miami he spoke to Sky Sports and stated that his time at Red Bull was fantastic: “Formula 1 is consuming everything and I have been involved with it for a long time. 2021 was a very busy year because of the exciting battle with Mercedes and at the same time the RB18 research. I don’t know, there came a point where I just felt, as Forrest Gump said, ‘I’m feeling a little tired.'”
Camper
Newey admits that the unrest at Red Bull played a bit of a role in his decision. He states that he works because he enjoys it, and that he needs a little break: “We, my wife Mandy and the dogs, are probably going to travel. We’ll take a camper or something and go through France and we’ll enjoy life. And then maybe at some point, I don’t know when, I’ll be in the shower and I’ll say, ‘This will be the next adventure.’ But at the moment there is no plan.”
