Four in a row: Lorena Wiebes again the best in Scheldeprijs after a strong sprint | Cycling

--

Lorena Wiebes has won the Scheldeprijs for the fourth consecutive time. “It was a push and pull, but I found enough space to sprint.” The Dutchman won in a bunch sprint ahead of Charlotte Kool and Martina Fidanza. SD Worx-Protime did a perfect job for the top favorite by catching the front runners just in time. Marthe Truyen is the best Belgian in sixth place.

The unofficial World Championship for women’s sprinters has once again turned into a bunch sprint. Anneke Dijkstra, together with Wilma Aintila, tried to stay out of the peloton’s grasp in Schoten, but that was beyond the sprinters’ teams. Mischa Bredewold – teammate of Lorena Wiebes – significantly increased the pace on the last passage over the Broekstraat. That was enough to bring back the leaders.

Team DSM company PostNL provided a perfect lead-out for Charlotte Kool, but the Dutch woman still had to recognize her superiority in her ex-teammate Lorena Wiebes, who already took her sixth victory of the season.

The Dutch sprint bomb won in Schoten for the fourth time in a row. Marcel Kittel’s record of five seems within reach. “I will try to equal the record next year,” says Wiebes.

Wiebes also showed off again with a striking victory gesture. “Floortje Mackaij told me in advance that I should do something with the song ‘Vogelvrij’ by Jan Smit and so it happened.” During her victory in the Tour of Drenthe, she also performed ‘My Guitar’ by the Dutch singer.

Wiebes already showed in the tougher classics that she can also handle those competitions, but she still wants to hold on to her trademark. “I am happy that I was able to show that I am still a pure sprinter and have not compromised on my sprint,” says Wiebes.

The SD Worx-Protime sprint star is also looking ahead to Saturday’s Paris-Roubaix. “This victory gives confidence to our team. We have shown that we can position ourselves well as a team, which will be very important on the cobblestones,” said Wiebes.
