The red card for Owen Wijndal has caused some bad blood in Antwerp. The action of the left back may have been stupid, but the movement was also minimal. Many believe that Jasper Vergoote was right not to intervene, but he was forced to do so by the VAR.

And that VAR was Lawrence Visser. In Cercle-Club there was a similar phase between Brandon Mechele and Kévin Denkey and it was settled amicably by the ref. Although Wijndal’s action remains indefensible.

“As an ex-footballer I can understand him, but what he did there remains stupid,” says Goots GvA. “Although the club or staff may have to inform the group in the future if Lawrence Visser leads the VAR again.”

Two yellow cards

“I have received twenty phone calls from fans, from Antwerp, Anderlecht and even Bruges. Everyone thinks the same: the VAR should never have interfered. Then this action between Hazard and Wijndal would have been over with two yellow cards.”

Goots does not think it is a good decision. “If you cannot properly assess such phases, you simply have too little feeling for football. Without this incident, I am convinced that Antwerp would never have lost that match against Anderlecht.”

“Now Van Bommel had to shift, with De Laet against his good foot in the left back position. If there is one position where Antwerp quickly gets into trouble, it is there.”
