The Tour of the Basque Country was over for Tom Pidcock before he even started. The Briton suffered no fractures in a fall during his exploration of the time trial, but his hip was badly hit. He returns home to recuperate.

Tom Pidcock did not start in the Tour of the Basque Country. The Briton crashed during the reconnaissance of the opening time trial and was taken to hospital.

“The wind caught me in one of the bends this morning during my exploration,” Pidcock responded in a video message.

“The initial scans here have not revealed any fractures, but we will continue to monitor it as it does not feel good.”

The Briton has a lot of problems with his hip. “It was hit badly. I can hardly lean on it. I am going home now to focus on my recovery.”

The crash is a blow for 24-year-old Pidcock, who wanted to prepare for the Walloon classics in the Basque Country. Last year he came second in Liège-Bastogne-Liège and third in the Amstel Gold Race.
