Arthur Vermeeren exchanged Royal Antwerp FC for Atletico Madrid in January. The pressure was clearly on to leave.
Actually, he had no choice. The financial problems of Royal Antwerp FC almost forced Arthur Vermeeren to leave. “I of course knew what the situation was, but after talking to my parents and supervisors, I said: ‘Even if they want me out of here, that will not influence my choice.’” Vermeeren tells Het Laatste Nieuws.
He didn’t want to leave for a club where he didn’t have the right feeling or didn’t see himself playing. “But I saw Atlético as a good step. A club I really wanted to play for. That’s why I made that choice. Not because Antwerp wanted me to leave, or not,” he is very clear.
Considered skipping transfer for European Championships
The fact that he has been called up for the national team is a big boost, because he will not get much playing time with his new team for the time being. The European Championship is a goal in itself, but Vermeeren only wants to go to Germany if he can play a role in the team.
And for that he even wanted to pass up a transfer. “We considered staying in Antwerp, because then I would have had more security, but would I have been the best version of myself? No,” Vermeeren concludes very clearly.
