According to a study by the bank ING, 65 percent of working people will feel the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) in the workplace. In turn, this amounts to around 3.3 million Belgians whose jobs will be affected by the technology. That does not necessarily mean that jobs will be lost.

There are shifts in the labor market and there is a major impact, but not necessarily more unemployment,” Peter Vanden Houte, chief economist at ING, summarizes the study on the impact of AI in Belgium. “There is a positive impact on economic growth in the long term, but it is much smaller in Europe and Belgium than in the United States.”

ING’s research department estimates that AI can profoundly change the Belgian labor market, with an impact on many jobs and sectors. According to author Charlotte de Montpellier, there is a high “AI exposure” for 65 percent of employees or 3.3 million Belgians, the rest are unaffected. 31 percent of jobs (1.6 million Belgians) will benefit from it, while in 34 percent (1.7 million Belgians) AI can take over human tasks.

“However, these figures do not mean that this percentage of employees will lose their jobs,” the bank said. A job consists of many activities, so the disappearance of full-time jobs would be limited, it is said. In light of labor shortages and an aging population, ING does not believe this would lead to rising unemployment.

The study was accompanied by a representative survey conducted among a thousand Belgians at the end of last year. 42 percent believe widespread use of AI will create more jobs than it costs in the next five years. Three percent fear for their own job.
