At the Royal Athenaeum in the Brussels district of Sint-Lambrechts-Woluwe, several dozen students became unwell on Tuesday morning due to inhaling chlorine fumes in the school swimming pool. This is reported by the Brussels fire brigade. 16 students were taken to hospital.

There were several dozen children in the swimming pool of the secondary school on Jacques Brellaan on Tuesday morning. “Several students complained of respiratory irritation on Tuesday morning,” says fire spokesman Walter Derieuw. A measurement showed the presence of chlorine gas in the building, which, according to the Brussels fire brigade, was the result of an accidental mixture of two chemicals.

The fire brigade arrived on site around 11:30 am with five ambulances, three mosquito teams, and a specialized Hazmat team (for combating hazardous substances, ed.). The students were examined on site to determine whether they needed to be taken to hospital. That was ultimately the case for sixteen of them. They were transferred to different hospitals.

The fire brigade intervention is now coming to an end and the school is still being thoroughly ventilated.
