The Public Prosecution Service in Spain is demanding 2.5 years in prison for Luis Rubiales, the former president of the Spanish Football Federation, for the much-discussed kiss during the Women’s World Cup. The prosecutor also wants Rubiales, who has been accused of sexual assault, to pay 100,000 euros in damages to Spanish world champion Jennifer Hermoso, AFP news agency reports.
Rubiales was officially charged at the end of January. Investigations had shown that the controversial kiss Rubiales gave on Hermoso’s mouth during the World Cup medal ceremony in August was ‘non-consensual’, not consensual. The court stated this in January.

The judge also accused Rubiales and three football officials of coercion against Hermoso. In addition to Rubiales, these are technical director Albert Luque, the then coach of the national women’s team Jorge Vilda and Rubén Rivera, who was responsible for marketing at the Spanish Football Association. They allegedly pressured Hermoso to say in a video that the kiss had been done with her consent. However, she has always denied that.
The 46-year-old former director is also a suspect in a corruption case. Several people were already arrested this month in the criminal investigation into corruption surrounding the awarding of the Spanish Super Cup to Saudi Arabia. Rubiales’ home in Granada and the Spanish federation’s headquarters in Madrid were also searched.
In the aftermath of the kissing scandal, Rubiales was suspended by world football association FIFA and the Spanish Court of Arbitration for Sport and had to resign as president of the Spanish association.
