On the Merksem viaduct of the Antwerp ring road, the morning rush hour promises to be extra difficult on Friday. In the direction of the Netherlands, a contractor is carrying out emergency repairs to a bridge joint, which may require the use of three of the four lanes. This was reported by the Roads and Traffic Agency on Thursday evening. It is not yet known on Thursday evening how long the works, and the associated nuisance, will last.

The bridge joint in question already underwent a temporary repair last week, but an element of the joint broke on Thursday evening due to the heavy traffic load. Two lanes have already been closed in the direction of the Netherlands. Emergency repairs will start at 6 a.m. Friday. It is possible that three lanes will be closed during the works. The Traffic Center therefore warns of extra traffic jams.

Road users are advised to avoid the Antwerp ring road towards the Netherlands if possible. You can make a detour to the north via the R2 in the harbour. The Liefkenshoektunnel (R2) in the direction of the Netherlands will be made toll-free there from Friday morning, in the direction of the Netherlands, depending on the traffic. This measure will apply for as long as necessary. This information is also given in the traffic bulletins on the radio and through the channels of the Traffic Center.

The bridge joint, which is located between the Deurne and Merksem exits, will be thoroughly renovated later this year. That will happen in November at the earliest.
