A personal accident took place on the railway between Lichtervelde and Torhout on Saturday afternoon around 1.15 pm. A man was killed as a result. The passengers had to

The train, which was traveling in the direction of the Torhout station, came to a stop about 250 meters past the collision site, near the De Ringaert industrial estate in Torhout.

“There were about 45 passengers on the train,” says Lieutenant Jürgen Delchambre of the Torhout fire brigade. “Because a four meter wide stream flows between the industrial estate and the railway, we had to build an emergency bridge to evacuate the passengers. The passengers remained on the train while waiting for the bus. It had air conditioning and Infrabel also provided the passengers with the necessary drinking water.”

The train was evacuated less than an hour after the accident. The bus took the passengers to Torhout station. The train is still stationary and an investigation into the circumstances of the accident is ongoing.

No prosecutor has yet been appointed. It is not yet clear whether it was an act of desperation or an accident.
