Young driver (18) speeds through construction zone at 110 km per hour: car seized and provisional driving license lost (Domestic)

The police caught a young driver on Tuesday afternoon who reached speeds of up to 110 kilometers per hour in a construction zone on the R6, where the maximum speed was 50 km per hour. The (learner) driver’s car was seized on behalf of the public prosecutor’s office.

Rivierenland police zone had received a complaint that a young student driver would regularly tour around Mechelen-Noord around noon. He would also take friends for a tour. “But according to the complaint, his car did not have an ‘L’ and the passengers were said to be young and certainly too young to be a companion. It was also reported that the young driver would perform dangerous traffic maneuvers during his journeys,” explains police spokesman Dirk Van de Sande.

A police traffic team found the car in question on Tuesday in Eikestraat in Mechelen. “The driver drove via the Liersesteenweg to the R6, where he almost collided with another road user while merging. On the R6 the car reached speeds of up to 110 kilometers per hour. This also happened in a construction zone, where a speed limit of 50 kilometers per hour was in force.”

The police kept a discreet eye on the vehicle and then noticed that the young driver was driving back towards Mechelen via the roundabout of the R6 with Berlaarbaan in Sint-Katelijne-Waver. “The car and the eighteen-year-old driver were then checked in Nekkerspoelstraat,” said Van de Sande.

Driver’s license revoked

The police seized the car on behalf of the public prosecutor’s office. The young man’s provisional driver’s license has been revoked for fifteen days. (tdk)
