The 2022 accident with a small plane in Iceland that resulted in three victims living in our country was caused by human error. This is stated in the research report. In addition to the three passengers, the pilot also died.

A human error. That is the cause of the plane crash on Lake Þingvalla in Iceland in 2022. The Cessna C172 was too heavy to land there, it turns out. As a result, the wheels almost immediately fell through the ice, according to the final report of the Transportation Accident Investigation Committee that was published today.

Three employees of the fashion label Suspicious Antwerp were killed in the plane crash in February 2022. Three adventurers who lived in our country. The pilot also died.

No distress signal

Icelandic pilot Haraldur Diego (49) took off with the three tourists for a flight over the so-called Golden Circle, a very popular route among tourists through Icelandic natural beauty. An hour and a half later the aircraft suddenly disappeared from the radar. Without a distress signal having been sent. None of the occupants survived. (Read more below the photo)

What is certain is that the Cessna sank with its wheels through the ice on Lake Thingvalla almost immediately after landing. It took another two minutes before the device completely disappeared beneath the water’s surface. It appears that the occupants climbed out through the open windows and then tried to swim away. But that was too optimistic at outside temperatures of minus 8 degrees to minus 11 degrees. According to the autopsy, they died by drowning. The occupants were also not wearing life jackets, which were still in the plane wreckage.

Emergency landing?

One of the victims was 26-year-old Dutchman Tim Alings, who lived with his family in Schoten, Antwerp, for years. Alings worked as a marketer for the Antwerp fashion label and helped organize the trip to Iceland. Another victim was Nicola Bellavia (32), from Lasne in Walloon Brabant. Bellavia, the child of a Spanish mother and an Italian father, loved parachuting and skydiving. (Read more below the photo)

Skater Josh Neuman (22), who lives in our country, was also on the plane and died. His YouTube channel had more than 1 million followers.

It is not known whether the experienced pilot deliberately made a short landing on the frozen lake – at the request of the occupants – or whether he had to make an emergency landing. The research was not able to demonstrate this.
