Artist Luc Lingier from Schilde not only made a ‘warm appeal to register en masse for Atelier in Beeld’, but also came up with the idea of mapping out a cycling route. “A group has more impact than an individual. The larger the group of open studios, the greater the motivation of potential visitors to visit. The trip will be worth it, because there is a lot to see,” Luc had taken a good look.

Thirteen artists, spread over ten studios, responded to Luc’s call and joined forces with the municipality of Schilde. The result? A beautiful cycling route through the green municipalities of Schilde, Wijnegem and Halle, consisting of one large cycle route or two smaller loops of 15 kilometers each, which led you past the various studios

Years ago, Karin Truyts transformed her former garage on August Dierickxlaan into a lettercap studio. “About 30 years ago I started a calligraphy course. The first steps in a world of letters and numbers on paper, with pen and ink. En route and inspired by my role model Maud Bekaert, I exchanged the pen for a hammer and a chisel and the paper for stone,” said the hostess during a demonstration.

Tombstone

Typography is a constant in our lives. More often unconsciously than consciously. The seemingly endless ways in which the letters of the alphabet continue to be designed, conceived and shaped is a constant source of delight and wonder. Letter caps is an age-old craft with various applications: a gravestone, a house number, a personal text, a birthstone…. each time different and always unique. I use existing fonts as well as my own designs.

Karin’s letters decorate not only gardens and facades, but also gravestones, even on the Schoonselhof. The work of the originally West Flemish sculptor Luc Lingier can also be found everywhere in the country. He built up extensive technical experience as a stonemason/sculptor in the restoration sector. He was also an art teacher and natural stone carver teacher.

Hope and desire

“In my sculptures I often combine stone with other materials. Recent works, such as my evocative boat shapes, depict a means of displacement or transformation. This can be in a real world or in an imaginary universe. “Hope for” and “longing for” are central thoughts when creating my works. They critically refer to current situations or invite you to fantasize about your own dream world,” says Luc in his open studio on Goudbloemlaan.

Other participants were Erna Devos and Suzanne Philipsen (ceramics, painting), Astrid van Drie and Daan van Drie (graphics), Anna van der Kaaij (painting), Pieter Gellings and Olga Pelgrim (sculpture, painting, felting, photography), Ignace Bauwens (painting), Sven Van der Stappen (sculpture, letter caps), Ingrid Van der Heyden (sculpture, mixed media, painting, drawing, textiles) and Christel Rapier (installations, mixed media, painting).
