The municipality and police are in dialogue with Net Brussels to see what should be done. The municipality put forward various proposals, including working hours. Many of the workers start at 5:30 a.m., when there is more risk of bad encounters, the city says. So far, the discussions have not led to a resumption of work by Net Brussels.

In the meantime, acting mayor Frédéric Nimal (Défi), at the initiative of councilor for cleanliness Deborah Lorenzino (Défi), has taken a decision to engage a private company to take on the maintenance tasks of the public space instead of Brussels Proprietary. A first intervention is planned for Wednesday, May 1.

“On behalf of the municipality of Schaerbeek, I would like to express my full support to the officers who have been victims of these unacceptable facts. Every official who performs a public service has the right to respect in the performance of his duties and has the right to perform them in complete safety to implement,” says Lorenzino.

Despite the understanding, Lorenzino points out that the choice of Bruxelles-Propreté will worsen the situation, “because leaving trash in the neighborhood will only reinforce the feeling of impunity and insecurity.”

In principle, the garbage is still collected by Net Brussels, although the agency informed the municipality that there will be disruptions from Thursday 2 to Sunday 5 May.
