The European Championships in Germany are gradually approaching and that means that national coach Domenico Tedesco has to start making decisions. The Italian selector of the Red Devils may select three additional players and that raises the inevitable question: who do you choose?
If it is up to Philippe Albert, Alexis Saelemaekers should go to the European Championships this summer. The Bologna playmaker is doing great in Serie A and his team is still in the running for a Champions League ticket. Bologna is in fourth place in Italy with four games to go.
Saelemaekers is doing particularly well on the left winger and could well be the replacement for Yannick Carrasco. The latter has a bad season in Saudi Arabia. “At this moment I would take Saelemaekers with me,” said Philippe Albert LaTribune. “If the coach looks at the current form, he has to be there.”
Double occupancy
Former national coach Marc Wilmots is also convinced that Saelemaekers can be an extra asset at the European Championship, although he does not think Carrasco should be left at home. “I would take both players. You need two players of the same level and you have to be able to double the position.”
“Given his level, he is a potential candidate,” Wilmots continued. “He has proven himself in Milan. But there will still be injuries and changes.” On Friday, Bologna will take on Torino, followed by matches against Napoli, Bologna and Genoa.
