Can you still swim in the provincial domains of Kessel-Lo and Diest in the future?: “There are two scenarios: one without and one with swimming water”

--

In the future you may no longer be able to swim in the provincial domains of Kessel-Lo and Diest. The provincial council today approved two scenarios per domain to renew the current accommodations. For each domain there is an option with swimming pools and an option with only water play areas. Which ones will ultimately succeed in Diest and Kessel-Lo will depend on the possible financial support from partners.

Tomorrow the swimming pools of the provincial domains in Kessel-Lo and Diest will open again, but both pools will disappear in the future. The province is working on new plans, where renovation is not an option anyway.

“These swimming pools are ancient. 30-40 years old. They can no longer be renovated, they can no longer be renewed.” Ann Schevenels (Open VLD), Deputy for Provincial Domains

“These swimming pools are ancient. 30-40 years old. They can no longer be renovated or renewed. Moreover, the current location in Kessel-Lo is no longer the right location because we see that there are regular floods there.” , says Ann Schevenels (Open VLD), Deputy for Provincial Domains.

There are two options for both domains: an option with a swimming and splashing zone and an option without swimming facilities, but with play areas in low water. For the opposition party Groen, the choice is clear, she regrets that there are also options without bathing water.

“Maybe you should also create an additional swimming pond there.” Tie Roefs (Green), Provincial Councilor

Provincial councilor Tie Roefs (Green) responds: “We want to swim. And for Kessel-Lo we say: okay, a new building in the events zone, a 25-meter pool and a paddling pool. We support that. But equally well, we want to the deputation will study the water elements. We say: perhaps you should also create an additional swimming pond there.”

Could it be that swimming is no longer possible in both domains?

“I’m not going to answer that. Those two scenarios are on the table. I think there has been a lot of reaction to that in the past and we have therefore decided as a province to also include the swimming event and those swimming zones as a scenario. “, says Schevenels.

Which scenario it will be will depend, among other things, on the budget and that in turn depends on possible partners. The city of Leuven, among others, is already showing interest. The final choice would be for next year, the rest of the planning is still unclear.
