The signing of the cooperation agreement took place in the physical presence of the Ambassador of Palestine to Belgium, while the Governor of Ramallah and Al Bireh, Laila Ghannam, observed the signing virtually.

Ghannam is the only female governor in Palestine. Brussels State Secretary for International Relations Ans Persoons (Vooruit.brussels) and Prime Minister Rudi Vervoort (PS) represented the Brussels Regional Government at the signing of the agreement.

Strengthen local development

In the agreement, the government and the governorate commit to jointly strengthening local development in the region. This is to further develop the economic, social, scientific, ecological and sanitary development of the 400,000 residents of Ramallah – Al Bireh Governorate.

The Brussels government will exchange technological and administrative expertise with the area and maintain close ties with the region.

The idea for signing a cooperation agreement with Ramallah – Al Bireh emerged in 2021. The original intention was to sign the agreement on site last year. Due to the tensions and violence taking place in the region, the mission was postponed and replaced by a digital conference.
