Francken firmly decides that allowing an abortion up to 18 weeks into pregnancy instead of 12 weeks is not possible. “I think the woman has the main voice in such a difficult and ethical decision. I have been in Parliament for 15 years now and I have had to vote many times on abortion and euthanasia and that remains a difficult issue. I have therefore looked into that file and I believe that we already have one of the most progressive legislations on abortion. I don’t think that should go to 18 weeks,” says Francken. The Netherlands is more progressive in this regard, but Francken still has questions about this. “I think the Netherlands is the most progressive in the world in many areas, but whether that makes them all so much happier is something completely different, of course.”

Fewer social rights for recognized refugees

Francken fully agrees with giving recognized refugees fewer social rights than other citizens. “From that moment on, a recognized refugee is given a status that must be equated with a Belgian. This is established by international law,” Francken begins. “But I think that the Commissioner General should award subsidiary protection statuses much more often instead of recognized refugee statuses.” The latter can give you fewer social rights and less right to family reunification, because you have to wait 2 years for that. We must do as Germany and all our neighboring countries do and give more subsidiary protection statuses and reduce those social benefits and social rights. We have to do that.”
