A 53-year-old from Veurne was in critical condition on Wednesday after a collision on the zebra crossing in De Panne. The woman initially appeared to be slightly injured, but her condition quickly deteriorated. “She turned out to have a serious pelvic fracture and internal bleeding was discovered in the hospital. She was put into a coma,” her family said.

The collision happened on Wednesday morning around 10 am in Zeelaan in De Panne. The woman crossed the zebra crossing at Nieuwpoortlaan. According to the West Coast police, the woman was hit by a 41-year-old man from Kortrijk in his Mercedes V. The woman fell to the ground, but remained conscious. She complained of back pain and was taken to hospital. She initially appeared slightly injured, but her condition quickly deteriorated.

“She was on her way to work and had the green light to cross,” her family said. “The other driver apparently also had a green light and turned over, but did not notice her. It was a serious collision, because she was catapulted about two meters further. The pain in her back ultimately turned out to be a serious pelvic fracture.”

“They immediately operated on her at the hospital in Veurne, but further examination revealed that she had also suffered internal bleeding. That is why they took her to the AZ in Bruges under MUG guidance. She turned out to be critical and was put into a coma for further treatment. It remains to be seen how her condition will evolve, but she will certainly have to recuperate for a long time.”
