Jan Vertonghen goes according to La Dernière Heure after the European Championships to retire as a Red Devil. The central defender would have communicated this in a private circle (where there is a leak anyway). The player himself denies the story.

La Capitale spoke the Anderlecht press service. Vertonghen responded through them. He says that he has not yet made a decision about his future with the Red Devils and Anderlecht.

Vertonghen has already played 154 international matches

Jan Vertonghen turns 37 on April 24. The European Championship may be his last dance with the national team. The central defender is the record international and has played 154 international matches for Belgium to date. He can certainly still reach the mark of 160. There are two more practice matches in June and then the matches at the European Championship itself.

Vertonghen has been a fixture for many years. He first played as a left back and then as a central defender. It would be logic itself that he would call it quits after this European Championship. Vertonghen also knows that he will not make it to the 2026 World Cup, when he will be 39 years old.

Another year at Anderlecht?

The fact that Vertonghen may say goodbye to the national team does not mean that he will stop as a footballer. RSC Anderlecht would love to keep him on board for another year. Vertonghen would lighten the agenda a bit, because RSCA will probably play in Europe again next year. The burden on the national team would be a bit much.

For the time being, there is a good chance that he will sign another year at Lotto Park. The fans want it, so do his teammates and the board. Now the record international himself.
