In the investigation into the house fire in which a 69-year-old woman died in Ronse on Monday, the 65-year-old resident of the building was arrested. This is reported by the East Flanders public prosecutor’s office, which confirms that the initial findings of the fire expert point to deliberate arson.

The fire started on Monday afternoon in the Spinstersstraat in Ronse, directly opposite the old Utexbel factory. The 65-year-old man was able to escape the fire, but the 69-year-old woman remained in the fire. The public prosecutor’s office appointed a medical examiner and an investigating judge.

The cause of the fire was under investigation, the prosecutor’s office said. “From the initial findings of the fire expert it can be deduced that this was a deliberate act of arson. In order to provide a complete answer, the results of the laboratory and the fire dog that was used are awaited. The resident of the building has now been arrested and brought before the investigating judge in Oudenaarde, who decided to arrest the 65-year-old man.”

The man will appear before the council chamber in Oudenaarde on Friday, which will decide on his further arrest.
