When some hikers walked through a field in Wommelgem last weekend, they found a cat that had been left behind in a suitcase. In the meantime, the cat – which turned out to be pregnant – has been housed in the Stray Cat Wommelgem animal shelter. “This is pure abuse.”

‘April 1st the day of jokes? A pregnant cat, callously dumped,” a shelter employee wrote on Facebook. Their animal hearts were clearly shocked when they heard the scandalous news about the kitten. Not only was she locked in a dumped suitcase, she was also pregnant. “We cannot and do not want to accept this, this is pure abuse,” it also reads.

Mieke

The organization is extremely grateful to the hikers who came to their aid. Once in the shelter, the found cat was renamed Mieke. “Here she is now quietly recovering from this trauma,” the shelter reports. “We cannot emphasize enough how important raising awareness is. If you can no longer care for your animal, please get help.”

The Easter weekend for Zwerfkat Wommelgem ended on a negative note. ‘This Easter weekend was painful for us. It is painful to discover that there really are still barbarians around,” they conclude the Facebook post.
