Hasselt

During the past Easter weekend, Katrien was smeared on her bench on the Hasselt Grote Markt. Police LRH looks at the images from surveillance cameras in the city to track down and fine the perpetrator.

The white sticky stuff on her body might be toothpaste. This normally does not leave any irreparable traces. The police hope that the cameras have filmed the perpetrator. The images are now being viewed.

The bronze statue couple ‘Hendrik and Katrien’ is officially called ‘Listening to the Carillon’. They symbolize Hasselt’s youth looking to the future, and they are said to be the first resident couple of Hasselt. The life-size figures serve as models for countless selfies and photo sessions.

When they were removed with a jackhammer in September 2019 for the reconstruction of the Grote Markt, this caused quite a commotion. But the images by artist Marc Cox from 1989 returned the following year, and they were once again given a place in the sun with a view of the Grote Markt.
