There is overwhelming scientific evidence that regular exercise reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, obesity, stroke, Alzheimer’s and osteoporosis, while increasing muscle strength and self-confidence and improving metabolism.

Of course, exercise is not a magic bullet for ‘everything’: stress helps you stay alert, but long-term, heavy stress eventually affects the immune system, with an increased risk of burnout.

Regular exercise can reduce stress levels. Another building block of health is a good night’s sleep. People who exercise – not just before going to bed – and exercise sufficiently sleep better and deeper on average than non-exercisers. Opinions differ about the number of hours of sleep you need. The American National Sleep Foundation compared 320 studies on sleep and arrived at 7-9 hours per night (18-64 years), and 7-8 hours for people over 65. Research shows that people who sleep too little are more likely to suffer from high blood pressure, weight gain and concentration problems. There does seem to be such a thing as individual sleep needs.
