If you puree apples and make juice from the pulp, you have apple cider vinegar. This acidic drink, sometimes called apple cider vinegar, is said to be a panacea in the fight against weight. That almost sounds too good to be true: can you really lose weight with apple cider vinegar? Or is this drink not that healthy at all?

This is what science says about losing weight with apple cider vinegar

If you look online for weight loss tips, you will soon come across apple cider vinegar. Articles claim that it boosts your metabolism and that your body retains less fat. Great stories, but the scientific evidence that apple cider vinegar will help you lose weight is wafer-thin.

Well, there is a recent Lebanese study that showed that. 120 people from 12 to 25 years old took part in an experiment. Everyone was overweight. Some of the test subjects drank apple cider vinegar for four to twelve weeks. They lost more kilos than the participants in the control group who received a placebo.

But such a small study is very limited. According to Ingeborg Brouwer, professor of Nutrition for Healthy Living at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, there is therefore no scientific substantiation that this drug works. “The short answer is no: you cannot lose weight with apple cider vinegar,” she says. But is this drink really good for anything?

How healthy is apple cider vinegar?

“It is often said that juices such as apple cider vinegar or water with lemon can help detoxify your body,” says Brouwer. ‘Detoxing your body happens in your liver and kidneys, the body does that itself. Apple cider vinegar has no influence on that.’ So you don’t have to drink acidic juices as a detox for your body.

The conclusion: apple cider vinegar does not have many demonstrable health benefits. The number on the scale won’t magically drop if you drink this every day, and your body won’t need it to detox either. So you can easily ignore this drink. Your teeth will also be happy with it, because these types of acidic drinks damage your tooth enamel.
