Because many complaints often go unnoticed, this can have very unpleasant consequences for both mother and child. On Wednesday, May 1, 2024, we therefore commemorate World Maternal Mental Health Day, to create more awareness of the mental health problems of mothers.

What are perinatal forms of depression?

The perinatal period is described as the period from pregnancy until the baby is one year old. During this period you may suffer from various forms of depression:

It can happen to anyone. Women of any culture, age, income level, and race can develop perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, and symptoms can also occur at any time during pregnancy and the first 12 months after delivery. There are now plenty of good treatments, but they need to be talked about. It is estimated that 70 percent of women hide or downplay their symptoms. Without understanding, support and treatment, these mental health conditions can have a devastating impact.
