At least three women infected with HIV virus after vampire facial

Vampire facial

First a brief explanation about the so-called vampire facial. This facial treatment uses plasma rich in platelets (Platelet Rich Plasma, or PRP) from your own blood. These plasma cells are then injected into the skin, which should improve the condition of the skin.

The women had made an appointment for this treatment, but it turned out differently than expected. The clinic where she had the vampire facial was subsequently found not to have a permit and disposable equipment intended for one-time use was reused.

In addition, investigators found unlabeled vials of blood on the counter and unwrapped syringes in drawers, on counters and discarded in regular trash bins.

Research

The New Mexico Department of Health launched an investigation into the spa in the summer of 2018 after receiving a report of a 40-year-old woman who had tested positive for HIV.

The spa was closed after investigators identified practices that could potentially spread blood-borne infections.

In 2022, the spa owner pleaded guilty to five charges of practicing medicine without a license and is now serving a 3.5-year prison sentence. The researchers say that the original source of the HIV infection at the spa remains unknown.
