As Belgians, we have known for some time that chocolate is a deliciously sweet sin. And according to a new study, it’s not even such a sin. Even more: chocolate could protect against Alzheimer’s disease.

At least that is the theory of a group of scientists affiliated with Zhengzhou University in China. In a new study, published in the Journal of functional foodsthey point in particular to the active substance theobromine, which we find in chocolate – and more specifically in cocoa beans.

“Theobromine has demonstrated neuroprotective properties, the ability to prevent neurological damage and promotes motor memory and cognitive regulatory functions. “Thanks to its rare side effects and minimal harm at appropriate doses, theobromine and its derivatives hold promise as effective agents to prevent brain-related disorders, offering significant medical prospects,” the study said.

Theobromine is particularly anti-inflammatory and rich in antioxidants. The substance could not only limit the impact of cholesterol on the brain, but would also exhibit antidepressant properties and help our body to break down fat. Reason enough to indulge in that bar of chocolate from now on, without feeling guilty.
