The new fast-charging station and the McDonald’s restaurant are being built on Meylandtlaan, a stone’s throw from the Heusden-Zolder exit of the E314 motorway. To this end, the former De Klimroos banquet hall will be demolished. The building is empty because the operators could not find a successor.

The fast charging station will accommodate twelve cars and has a charging capacity of up to 400 kW. According to a spokesperson, construction of the complex will begin at the end of this year. The charging points are also accessible for vans and people with disabilities. It is the first station with this concept from Storm and Q8 in Limburg.

The fast charging station in Heusden-Zolder is part of a network of more than 200 charging stations that will be rolled out by Q8 and Storm in the coming years. The rollout of the charging stations will start this summer and the intention is to build around forty stations every year. These are planted in easily accessible locations near major traffic routes and urban centers.

In many of the planned stations, visitors will also be able to do their shopping and have something to eat and drink. In this way, the initiators try to respond to the criticism that fast charging stations are often built in places where there is nothing to do. “We combine our expertise in renewable energy, mobility and shopping experience,” said a press release. “We believe this will make a big difference in the experience and comfort of customers with an electric car.” The charging stations are not combined with a McDonald’s everywhere. Q8 and Storm also work together with Delhaize and Panos.

The construction of 200 fast charging stations represents an investment of 250 million euros. Storm is responsible for the development and construction of the project. Q8 operates the stations through long-term lease agreements. The electricity is 100 percent renewable and of Belgian origin.
