“Members of Parliament must be able to work freely. That is the basis of our democracy,” Lahbib writes on X. “Following recent reports of intimidation and hacking of Belgian parliamentarians, the Chinese ambassador will be summoned.”

The news about Van Hoof’s hacking was published on Thursday in ‘Het Nieuwsblad’, and was also reported on Wednesday by the French-language magazine ‘Le Vif’. “The mere fact that the Chinese regime can locate me is very threatening,” Van Hoof says about the case. She frames the hacking in a series of threats that she says she has been feeling from the regime for several years. “For example, the Chinese ambassador has intimidated me several times.”

In addition to Van Hoof, Samuel Cogolati (Ecolo), vice-chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, is also said to have received and opened the email that allowed the hackers to strike. Both are members of IPAC, an international association of parliamentarians working on human rights in China.
