In addition:

You install an e-SIM profile on your device, then you can purchase a data bundle for a specific region. Those bundles are prepaid bundles.

At Revolutt, like many other roaming e-SIM providers, you can choose from 3 rate plans:

Local: you buy data for 1 country (Example of a current price: 5GB local Netherlands for 30 days now costs 10.50)
Regional: you buy data for a region, for example Europe (Example 5GB Europe for 30 days costs 18 euros)
Global: Your data works in many countries around the world. (Example 5 GB for 30 days for 32,- Euro)

You must also choose the validity period. Larger bundles are often valid for 30 days, smaller ones usually for 1 week. If you have used up your bundle, you can always top up new credit.

Then you might wonder why you would choose regional or local if you also have a World bundle. That is logically the price. With Local, only 1 country needs to be supported cheaply, which costs less for Revolutt. At the global level, the 1 GB price charged to Revolutt on average throughout the world must still be able to be sold profitably. In short: it is a unit price per GB for the entire world, so the cheaper countries are overpriced in order not to make losses on consumption in expensive countries.

And if you’re wondering how they do this?

They buy data cheaply from another provider. Often, for example, a Polish provider or an English one who offers cheap roaming. So you roam on an e-SIM from another European provider in the Netherlands. Often with the advantage that you can choose multiple networks within the Netherlands. That’s why I have an e-SIM as a backup connection in case of a malfunction or if I don’t have coverage anywhere from my own provider.

Finally, 2 last tips:

Enable data roaming for the e-SIM in your network settings. You usually surf via a foreign network via roaming with e-Sims.

With the largest (and often slightly more expensive) providers, you can immediately download an e-SIM profile on your phone. For others, this has to be done via a QR code that you receive or even completely manually.

After downloading an e-SIM profile, you still have to activate this e-SIM card. To activate an e-SIM you need a working data connection (via the mobile network of another SIM card or via WiFi), otherwise you will not be able to activate it.

E-SIM mainly works on more modern/newer devices. iPhones from the iPhone Xs, Google phones, Samsung phones such as the S23, S24 etc.

Old devices often only have 1 e-SIM location. Newer is an ever-increasing number of e-SIMs that you can install side by side. You can often install 1 to 7 e-SIMs on your device in addition to your regular SIM card. Via a toggle in the network settings you indicate which SIM you turn on for data and which SIM you use for your calls and text messages, so in theory you can activate your own e-SIM provider for each country when traveling, which is cheaper again. .

Devices with e-SIM are therefore dual SIM. These have hardware for use on 2 networks at the same time. Some phones support the use of 2 e-SIMs simultaneously (Iphone 13, 14, 15). Others only use 1 physical SIM and 1 e-SIM.

Pay attention to the price, coverage and validity!

If you want to go for an e-SIM solution, look for the best provider for you. There are quite a few e-SIM roaming providers. Then also take a look at Airalo, Holafly, Simly, Nomad, Flexiroam, Drimsim, ESIM plus, Dent, GlobalbyUSM, eSIMDB, etc.

Plenty of choice and, above all, possibly a better provider locally.

I also don’t know whether Revolutt itself is an MVNO or whether they in turn purchase from one of the other e-SIM providers.

edit: After some Googling, the e-SIMs appear to be from 1Global. Source: https://www.1global.com/?…0fYwmaEAAYASAAEgJmZPD_BwE
