Wallonia’s most famous journalist, Christophe Deborsu, will come to the Rex Hall on Tuesday, May 14, to talk about his novel ‘Bente and Boudewijn’. It is remarkable that Bente lives in Essen in the book and that the story has different endings.
Bente is a Flemish from Essen and Boudewijn a Walloon from Dinant. The book is more than just a story about love à la Romeo and Juliet. “The story tries to provide an answer to the question of whether Flanders and Wallonia still want to build a future together,” Christophe Deborsu told the municipality of Essen.
Of course he was also asked why he let his main character Bente live in Essen and go to school at the College? “Five or six years ago I arrived in Essen by train for the first time. The remote location and the fact that Essen is easily accessible by train were the deciding factor in making this Bente’s place of residence. I must say that I was immediately charmed by your beautiful station building, Rex hall, the nostalgic Cart Museum, the former customs center and the beautiful college where Bente goes to school,” says Deborsu.
“After reading the book, everyone can do a self-test. A questionnaire determines your degree of nationalism and you discover which ending best suits your ideas. Who knows, I might use some of these questions to start a conversation with the audience in the Rex hall on Tuesday evening. It is certainly special for me to return to the place where this story began for me,” Christophe Deborsu added. (SDK)
