This designer gives the Leopold Barracks in Ghent a makeover

Designer and interior designer Lionel Jadot’s Saturday: going out with his two ‘zinnekes’, going to the barracks and ending the day with chameleons.

“I’ve been working as a freelancer since I was eighteen, so I often work on Saturdays,” says interior designer Lionel Jadot (54). ‘Every day I spend a few hours in my studio, whether it is Saturday, Wednesday or Sunday.’

Jadot has just returned from the Salone del Mobile in Milan, together with the creative minds of Zaventem Ateliers, the hub for artisans, artists and designers that he founded near the airport. ‘In Milan we sat in an old department store, together with friends and family.’ Another group work: the book ‘Out of Catalogues’, which documents the repurposing of the former Brussels headquarters of Royale Belge into, among other things, the design hotel Mix and the Fox food market. ‘Drawing attention to local, young creative studios: that’s what drives me.’

7 hours | ‘Whether I wake up early or late on Saturday depends on whether or not I went out partying the day before. But I’m usually an early bird. And I like to start the day quietly.’

9:30 am | ‘My three children no longer live at home, but on Saturdays they are always welcome for the family brunch. The two eldest have just come with me to Milan. Josephine studied jewelry design at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and makes interesting things. Victoria, together with other artists, gave a contemporary dance performance twice a day in Milan. Very surprising. There is a lot of creativity in our family. Also with my wife, because she is an actress.’
