He wanted to share the enormous discharge with his loved ones. Immediately after the cup triumph with Union, coach Alexander Blessin sprinted into the stands to hug his family. His wife Charlotte – who is recovering after a stroke – received the first close hug. “It has been a particularly tough season for us as a family,” she shares.

In front of the cameras and off the field he is always ready for a joke, but behind the scenes Alexander Blessin has not had an average season.

Charlotte, Blessin’s other half, had a spinal cord infarction – or stroke – last July. She is currently in full recovery, but she did not want to miss her husband’s Cup final.

The Union coach has not forgotten that: immediately after the final whistle, he ran into the stands to hug her.

“It was a particularly tough season for us as a family,” says Charlotte, emotional about the moment. “But we always said we wanted to keep going. Because if you give up, everything will be for nothing.”

Normally I want to go down and celebrate this victory.

She is not yet able to really celebrate with the team and her partner.

“It’s tough for me,” Charlotte shares. “Normally I want to go down and celebrate this victory. But he knew it wasn’t easy for me to come here.”

Yet the joy and relief after the memory predominateactual moment.

“It is Alexander’s first title. He deserves this. But the whole of Union deserves this, it is a great team.”

Blessin himself will also cherish the moment. “I will carry the moment in my heart forever,” said the winner of the day.

“You know, it is not usual for my wife to come to the match. We had doubts – especially because it is difficult in this stadium. But she deserves this, she is part of me. This award is for her.”
