Anderlecht’s playing group has undergone a major transformation in the past year. Last summer in particular, CEO Sports Jesper Fredberg had a very busy mercato, in which he mainly brought in experienced players – with success. In January all that remained was to be corrected.

During the winter, Anderlecht’s transfer activity remained limited. With Mads Kikkenborg, a new reserve goalkeeper was added to compensate for the departure of Maxime Dupé, while the long-sought left-footed central defender was finally found. At the last minute, Federico Gattoni was hired from Sevilla.

Anderlecht thought about Van der Heyden

However, the search for a defender was a long one, because before the arrival of Gattoni, many other avenues ultimately came to a dead end. There was also a Red Devil. La Dernière Heure know that Anderlecht also made an attempt to bring back Siebe Van der Heyden in January.

The 25-year-old, who played one international match under Roberto Martinez in 2022, is a youth product of the Purple & White, although after spells at KV Oostende and FC Eindhoven it was ultimately at Union that he made his breakthrough. Last summer he secured a transfer to Mallorca, but that has not been a success so far.

Van der Heyden did not want to return

Van der Heyden barely gets around to playing in Spain, with barely 285 minutes in five matches in La Liga. Anderlecht wanted to take advantage of that difficult situation, but their request was rejected.

The player himself did not yet want to return to Belgium, because he still hoped to continue in Spain. That has not yet been successful, because since the conclusion of the winter mercato, his contribution to Mallorca has been limited to a ten-minute substitute appearance in the Spanish cup final.
