Ann Vermorgen, the chairman of the Christian trade union ACV, gave her first Rerum Novarum speech yesterday in Brussels. In it, she advocated, among other things, higher wages and a fifth week of paid vacation. She also believes that a new federal government should be put in place quickly after the elections.

Vermorgen calls on “not to lose valuable time with political jousting” and not to start “yet another round of state reform debates”. She expects that a new federal government will be in place before the end of the year, “with good cooperation within the federal government and with the other policy levels”.

According to ACV, this new federal government must be in place before the end of the year and must work around three perspectives. Just like Crevits, the Christian union believes that “work should pay”, without reducing benefits and without index jumps. “Antisocial bloodlust has never helped anyone, on the contrary,” it says.

ACV also calls for protection of social security. The state needs additional income, but the union wants to get it from a fair tax on wealth and all capital income.

Finally, Vermorgen calls for workable work. She also calls for a right to training for everyone – including SMEs – and repeats the plea for 25 days of statutory leave. Time credit without a motive may also be reintroduced for the Christian trade union.
