Brussels and Kortrijk had a chance to participate in Elite Gold for a long time, but did not realize this and had to be satisfied with a place in Elite Silver. Brussels has already lost five of the nine games, the Spurs even six. It looked like it would be a close game on Friday night. Despite the result (91-82), it was.

Kortrijk started brightly, but Brussels responded appropriately. Libert in particular (26 points) ensured that the first quarter only ended 20-21. Just before half-time, many Brussels bombs hit the mark, resulting in a change of sides at 48-41. Brevin Pritzl had his sights set a lot more sharply during halftime, as he scored no fewer than eleven points in less than three minutes for a total of 22 points. This time there was no question of the traditional weak third quarter, as the people of Kortrijk entered the final quarter with a score of 63-65. With five minutes left on the clock it was still 78-76, but then the Spurs collapsed. They only managed six more points, which allowed the home team to freewheel to victory.

“Those final minutes were in stark contrast to our strong third quarter,” said assistant coach Milan Torrekens. “One of the causes was that our shots no longer fell while Brussels’ did. The story of our entire season is that when things get tough, we don’t grow closer, but rather start playing further apart. Brevin Pritzl may be doing well, but if he no longer gets the right assists, he cannot do it alone. We play far too individually. Everyone feels called to take the team by the hand and get them over the hurdle, but the team aspect is lost too much of sight.”

Kortrijk plays two more home matches and then the season is over. “We want to end on a good note,” said Torrekens. “We will go for it two more times against Bergen and Yoast. We want to see an enthusiastic team against Bergen. As a coach you want to win, and we are convinced that the players want that too. Preferably in front of a full and equally enthusiastic audience. In January, Bergen beat us at home 72-80. So we still have an egg to peel with the Walloons.”
