NICCI FRENCHVoices in the darkness Ambo/Anthos, 442p

The eight-part series about psychotherapist Frieda Klein that the writing couple Nicci French wrote between 2011 and 2018 clearly left its mark. When Nicci and Sean met in 2019 House full of lies picking up the thread of the standalone literary thriller again, it took some getting used to for both the audience and the duo. But now we are five years and a few books later and they seem to have released their latest one Voices in the darkness gradually get back to cruising speed.

Nancy North isn’t having it easy. Her big dream of having her own restaurant fell apart and the relationship with her dominant partner Felix is not going smoothly either. She is therefore treated and takes medication. When Felix decides to move to the other side of London, where she knows no one and is in danger of becoming lost, she fears the worst. She has only just met her new neighbors when a young woman is found dead. Everything points to Kira hanging herself. Nancy has her doubts about that. But she is completely alone in that view. Her husband, helped by some neighbors, even has her admitted to an institution. Fortunately for Nancy, there is Inspector Maud O’Connor, who we meet Has anyone seen Charlotte Salter? met for the first time. She believes Nancy and starts an investigation that leaves no stone unturned about most of the men in this story.

The two interesting central characters, the brooding setting and a credible insight into the world of psychiatry are plus points for this novel, which could have benefited from a tighter and more strongly developed plot.
