If you become prime minister, you get your congratulations on Twitter these days. And then you have to be careful to address the right recipient. The Swedish Prime Minister and a British Member of Parliament, among others, experienced that this is not self-evident. They learned that new British Prime Minister Liz Truss is not the same person as the hitherto unknown Liz Trussell.

You can find British Prime Minister Liz Truss on Twitter under the account @trussliz and not under @liztruss. Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson and British Green MP Caroline Lucas now know this. Soon after the announcement that Liz Truss is the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, her Swedish counterpart Magdalena Andersson was ready with congratulations. But on Twitter, she got hold of the wrong person.

“Congratulations to Liz Truss, who will assume the role of Prime Minister of Great Britain. Sweden and Great Britain will continue the deep and extensive cooperation. It’s important for our citizens, economies and security,” Andersson tweeted @liztruss. But that’s the account of one Liz Trussell, who only announces on Twitter that she joined the club in May 2009. She certainly has a sense of humor, as is apparent from her witty response: “Looking forward to a visit soon! Get the meatballs ready.” The Swedish Prime Minister deleted her tweet.

Caroline Lucas, UK MP for the Greens for Brighton, also addressed the wrong Twitterer. She accused @LizTruss that she “still doesn’t get it” and that “she has campaigned as a right-wing ideologue and will also rule as such, which is a disaster for all of us”. When Lucas realized her mistake, she apologized, adding that Liz Trussell would “probably do better to be honest”.

The centre-right news magazine Right of Center UK also congratulated Liz Trussell instead of Liz Truss, calling the former “the most suitable person for the job”.

Another Twitter user suggested that the Queen could accidentally appoint Liz Trussell Prime Minister via Twitter. Trussell’s response: “Yes! Queen Liz and I would definitely be best friends.”
