We totally get it if the summer holidays are already long in your memory and you need a new trip. If you don’t want that to take a big bite out of your budget, Athens is an excellent choice: the Greek capital has been voted the cheapest city trip destination in Europe. And a Portuguese city also turns out to be a budget-friendly choice…

The British Post Office Travel Money looked at which popular city trip destinations it is cheap to stay at. During that analysis, it found that prices in the Greek capital Athens have fallen by 15 percent since 2021, financially affecting your stay in the city. A couple today pays around £207 or 240 euros, for two nights in a three-star hotel, evening meals and tickets for public transport. That hotel costs an average of 89 pounds (or 103 euros) for two nights, an evening meal with wine for two people comes to 39 pounds (45 euros) and a ticket for two days of public transport at 7.79 pounds (9 euros). Airplane tickets and transport to and from the airport are not included in the total price.

Rather a fan of Portugal? In the Southern country, Lisbon is friendly to your wallet. The capital comes just after Athens and will cost you an average of 218 pounds (or 251 euros) for two nights of hotel, food and public transport. Athens and Lisbon are a surprising top two, beating eastern destinations that are usually better known for their low prices. One of these is Krakow, Poland, where you pay 219 pounds (or 254 euros) for the same stay. Latvian Riga comes in fourth with 220 pounds (or 255 euros), Budapest in Hungary closes the top five cheapest destinations with an average of 221 pounds (or 256 euros).

If you want to travel to the north earlier, you often lose twice as much money compared to a city trip to Athens. The Dutch Amsterdam takes the cake with 593 pounds (or 687 euros) for the same holiday formula. In Venice, Copenhagen, Dublin, Paris and Stockholm you will spend around 500 euros for two nights and three days.
