The woman had gone into the sea around 8 p.m. on Sunday evening. A man who had seen her go on San Miquel beach raised the alarm when she hadn’t returned after an hour. The rescue services police and fire brigade immediately took action with ships and a helicopter. The search turned up nothing and was suspended until dawn at 2 a.m. Resumption was not necessary as the wanted victim managed to attract the attention of a passing ship to which she had swum.

According to Spanish media, the woman had left her personal items, including a mobile phone, on the beach when she went swimming. Her dog also waited neatly in the sand. The national broadcaster RTVE reported that she was a good swimmer but had drifted because of the strong current. She was rescued four kilometers from the coast. The water at the site in the Mediterranean was 30 degrees, which is believed to have played an important role in holding out for so long without a life jacket or rubber suit.
