One of the perpetrators of the stabbings in Canada, which left at least 10 dead and 18 injured, has been found dead in the area where the various stabbings took place. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) announced this on Monday night. His brother is still on the run but may have been injured.

It concerns 31-year-old Damien Sanderson. His body was found in a grassy area in James Smith Cree Nation, where the stabbings had occurred the day before, and suffered serious injuries that could not have been caused by himself, according to police. Police declined to comment on whether he may have been killed by his own brother.

His younger brother Myles Sanderson (30), no stranger to the courts, is still being sought with all his might. It is currently unclear where to look for him. According to police commissioner Rhonda Blackmore, it is possible that he has suffered injuries and is therefore seeking medical help. “Did he kill his brother? That’s one avenue we’re looking into, but we can’t say for sure,” Blackmore said. She also warned that he can still be dangerous even if he is injured. “Myles has a long criminal record that includes both personal and property crimes. We still consider him armed and dangerous. Don’t go near him.”

Canadian police launched a large-scale manhunt for both brothers on Sunday. They are suspected of a series of deadly stabbings in two remote towns with large indigenous populations in western Saskatchewan province. The brothers struck at 13 different places in both communities. At least 11 people, including 9 from within the indigenous community, were killed and 18 others injured. Local administrators do not rule out that the stabbings were caused by drug use and trafficking.

The search for both perpetrators – in view of the particularly serious seriousness of the facts – brought together hundreds of officers. The search was briefly extended to the neighboring provinces of Manitoba and Alberta. Together, these three provinces are about half the size of all of Europe. Arrest warrants have been issued for both brothers.
