In the United States, a federal judge has granted a request from former President Donald Trump’s legal team to appoint an independent arbitrator to review documents previously seized during the raid on Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort .

Trump has won an important blow with the decision of Judge Aileen Cannon, who he himself appointed as a judge in the state of Florida in 2020. Just as the former president wanted, the investigation into the documents Trump took from the White House after the end of his term is now delayed. The US Department of Justice must immediately stop investigating the documents, various American media report.

The Justice Department had previously stubbornly resisted the ex-president’s request. According to the ministry, he could not claim such privilege because the documents are not his, but the government’s. “He’s no longer president,” Jay Bratt, senior defense attorney for the Department of Counterintelligence, told Cannon during a Sept. 1 hearing. “And because he’s no longer president, he didn’t have the right to take those documents with him.”

The Justice Department also said there was no point in appointing a special master because its filtering team — a group of agents not part of the investigation — had completed its work. Trump has previously accused the Justice Department of unleashing a political witch hunt against him. his lawyers argued that appointing an independent third party to review the material would be an important check on the government.

Trump is under investigation for taking government documents, some of which were classified as “highly confidential,” after leaving the White House and storing them in his home on his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach.

The Justice Department has said it is investigating possible obstruction. The FBI said it found evidence that Trump’s team may have deliberately withheld classified documents. Trump representatives falsely stated that they conducted a diligent investigation and returned all confidential documents to the government — a claim that was later refuted after the FBI recovered about 33 boxes containing more than 11,000 government documents and photos and more than 100 classified documents.
