Russian soldiers receive a modest basic salary, which is supplemented by all kinds of bonuses and allowances. According to the British, there are “in all likelihood significant problems” with paying the significant combat bonuses that soldiers in Ukraine are entitled to.
One of the main reasons is the unclear legal status of the military, as the Russian government describes the invasion of Ukraine as a “special military operation” and does not recognize it as warfare. Bureaucratic problems and corruption among executives also play a role, according to the ministry.
The Russian military seems to be failing to provide basic resources to the troops deployed in Ukraine. In addition to wages, it also concerns appropriate uniforms, weapons and rations. This has a negative effect on the morale of the soldiers.
War fatigue and the high number of Russian casualties are also important reasons, according to the British Ministry of Defense, that the spirit of the Russian soldiers is not going well.
