Kamikaze drones can fly to a spot and hang there for some time. They then attack their target, where they explode, causing death and destruction.

The ultra-conservative regime in Tehran says it has made a lot of progress in the development of drones in recent years. This is also evident in practice. The Russian army is now extensively using Iranian-made drones – of the Shahed type – in the war in Ukraine.

The new device, which has not yet been named, has many similar properties to the Russian Zala Lancet, a drone that is also frequently used in war. Tasnim says its performance will be “similar” to the Lancet, which can fly for at most an hour over a distance of 40 kilometers and carry three to six kilos of weight.

The drone is said to have been developed by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard “in response to ambushes”: soldiers can take the drone with them and deploy it if they are ambushed. Tasnim speaks of “a jewel for ground warfare”. The news agency also distributed a video of the drone.

The United States, Great Britain and Canada imposed new sanctions on Tehran on Thursday over its drone production. Tehran strongly condemned those sanctions.
