Brown bears attacked hikers again in Slovakia last weekend.

According to the Slovak news agency TASR, the attacks happened in the Liptov region, at the foot of the Tatra Mountains. In March, five people were injured in the same region by a brown bear that ended up in a town. Ultimately the animal was shot dead.

A couple was attacked by a bear while out for a walk on Sunday. They were able to take shelter in a mountain hut, but the man was injured in the legs.

Another victim was picking mushrooms on Saturday when he was attacked by a bear. He was able to fire a shot with a pistol and wound the animal. During a search for the bear, a hunter was attacked, but he also fired at the animal. The authorities are now calling on people to avoid the forest.

An estimated 1,100 to 1,200 bears live in the wild in Slovakia. More and more calls are being made to reduce that number.
